What is environmental interpretation?
Environmental interpretation is a pedagogical activity with the aim to achieve better understanding of the environmental processes (the interaction between the natural, cultural and socio-economical development) promoting public awareness raising and environmentally friendly behaviour.

 

The aims of project

The aims of this project:

    to establish basic structure for the national environmental interpreters network in Latvia;

    to promote careful and deferential attitude to the nature and environment;

    to develop pedagogical and communicative tools for the environmental education process.
Project activities

For this purpose during the project following things are carried out:

    Environmental Interpretation Secretariat established in the Latvian Museum of Natural History;

    permanent 22 environmental interpreters network in whole Latvia developed;

    three sub-projects in Gauja National Park, North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve and Nature Studies and Environmental Education Research Centre in Daugavpils University realised to facilitate the development in different themes of the environment like terrestrial, water and urban ecosystems;

    training programme prepared for 22 environmental interpreters in the frames of the project as well as for extra trainees in future;

    training courses for environmental interpreters from different institutions conducted by Latvian and Danish experts;

    four exhibitions for the purpose to interpret environment will be set up in the sub-projects and in the Latvian Museum of Nature History;

    handbook for environmental interpreters as well as several informative materials for a wide audience (project target groups) will be prepared and published;

    Development Plan for the Service of environmental interpreters will be prepared and approved by officials.

The project period: January of 2001 – December of 2002

 

 

Vision
The vision for the future environmental interpretation service could be expressed in the following sentences:
  1. The society – the public, the politicians and the institutions – is well informed and interested about environmental issues and have a high level of environmental awareness and motivation for actions protecting the environment.

  2. The Government has approved a National Strategy and Action Plan for Environmental Interpretation and ensured basic funding of a nation-wide Environmental Interpretation Service.

  3. An Advisory Board is evaluating the development of the interpretation service and advising the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development and other ministries and institutions about the development of the Environmental Interpretation Service.

  4. A number of well-trained Environmental Interpreters are carrying out several interpretation activities.

  5. A network of Environmental Interpreters is established, possibly as a non-governmental organisation or association with clear aims and tasks, exchanging experience through an annual conference, a magazine and the internet system and participating in preparation of guidelines, training and certification.

  6. A secretariat or national environmental interpretation centre is established funded by the Government and responsible for co-ordination, training, certification and internal and external information as homepage, newsletter etc.

  7. Regional Environmental Interpretation Centres established within regional boards or agencies of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development responsible for development of activities and facilities.
This vision for the Environmental Interpretation is seen as the background for the purpose of the project as expressed in the Project 
Document:

- Reinforce human and institutional capacity for environmental interpretation.
- Establish network structures in order to facilitate experience exchange.

Lay down the framework for a nation-wide Environmental Interpretation Service in Latvia.
