Environmental interpretation is a pedagogical activity performed by environmental interpreter with the aim to achieve better understanding of the environmental processes (the interaction between the natural, cultural and socio-economical development), promoting public awareness raising and environmentally friendly behaviour.

The aim of the VITILA project is to establish the basic framework of a national Environmental Interpretation Service in Latvia. For this purpose the project will:
Establish an Environmental Interpretation Secretariat in the Latvian Museum of Natural History;
Develop and implement the training programme;
Conduct training courses for 22 environmental interpreters;
Organise three thematic sub-projects:

Gauja National Park (terrestrial ecosystems)
North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve (water ecosystems);
Nature Studies and Environmental Education Centre in Daugavpils University (urban environment)
Develop four exhibitions especially for environmental interpretation purposes in the sub-projects and Latvian Museum of Natural History;
Publish a handbook for environmental interpreters as well as several informative materials for a wide audience.

You are welcome to ask questions to the project forum for additional information
about environmental interpretation and activities performed by the environmental interpreters involved in the project.
The project is implemented in co-operation between the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of the Republic of Latvia and Danish Ministry of Environment and Energy.
